Choose your flag

Live Action Film performance by Ali Toffan Al-Fatlawi and Wathiq Al-Ameri

In this work, created with my collaborator Wathiq, I stand as a human pedestal for a world in flux — holding a monitor that flickers through the flags of every nation. The colors and symbols flash too quickly to name, too briefly to claim.

In front of me, a simple button invites an act of choice. Viewers press it, reaching for a flag they desire, an identity they wish to hold. Yet almost always, the image has already shifted — replaced by another emblem not of their choosing. Surprise, frustration, and laughter ripple through the space.

The work becomes a meditation on the lottery of birth. Our passports, our so-called “origins,” are assigned in a heartbeat we do not remember. The boundaries that shape our freedoms and limitations are drawn long before our first breath. In the gap between intention and result, the piece exposes the fragility of choice, the arbitrariness of belonging, and the global game of chance in which we are all players.

Let’s chose our flag.
